Joe Pasternack is the head basketball coach at the University of New Orleans.
His path?
An assistant coaching position at the University of California. And a four year stint as a manager at the University of Indiana under Bob Knight.
"Serving as a manager under Coach Knight at Indiana was the greatest experience of my life," Pasternack said via a phone interview on Monday. "I learned how to serve people," he said in regards to those managerial duties.
Pasternack, who took over for now Marquette Head Coach Buzz Williams, emphasized how important it is to work your hardest in the present and not to get ahead of ourselves.
"You need to make the best of right now," he said. "If you have one foot out the door, it is not going to work."
It is the only way that next job will come, he explained. Pasternack mentioned how important it is to work your hardest for your current employer.
"You can't give an order until you have taken an order," he said.
Managers are consistently taking orders from players, coaches and basketball staff. It is just simply what managers do. It is those orders, if accomplished efficiently, that will be asked of them again and again. There is trust that must be gained and once it is gained, the doors begin to open.
Discipline, sacrifice and loyalty are three very important things, Pasternack said, that he has learned and has carried along with him to New Orleans.
Employers are looking for an incredible work ethic and loyalty from people, the New Orleans Coach said.
"That will go a long way," he said.
Pasternack is an inspiration to managers across the country because of his focus on the "now" and the work ethic he has emphasized in his own life.
